One person dies after vehicle hits a ditch in Shelby County field early Wednesday

One person was killed in an off-road crash that may have been caused by a medical episode in a Shelby County field early Wednesday morning, according to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash occurred about 3:45 a.m. in the field north of Bassett Road when the vehicle struck a ditch, according to the sheriff’s office.

The vehicle rolled several times, and the driver was ejected. They were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to investigators.

Bassett Road is located between North Riley Highway and U.S. Highway 421 near Caesars Entertainment Equine Specialty Hospital.

Investigators have no reason to suspect drugs, alcohol or speed were factors in the crash, said Maj. Chris Holder with the sheriff's office.

The driver may have had a medical episode that caused the crash, Holder said.

The identity of the person killed was not available for release Wednesday morning, according to the sheriff's office. The person killed in the crash had not been identified as of Wednesday morning, according to the sheriff’s department.
