Wild card weekend's five least valuable people

Honorable Mention: 3conomics. I don't get the commercials, Wendy's. I know that you have three sandwiches that you believe to be of superior quality, but I don't know how those guys are supposed to entertain me or make me feel good about your sandwiches. I don't like them. You'd have been better off hiring Jake Long to stare at a camera and bellow, "I LIKE SANDWICHES" for 30 seconds.

5. Chad Pennington. Two quarterbacks had truly abysmal games this weekend, but I'm going to give Penny the break and leave him in the five-spot for a couple of reasons. One, he faced a very mean defense and his team seemed to be fighting above their weight class, and two, the other quarterback (see number three), you kind of expected it from.

4. NFL officiating. So, Ed Hochuli's crew was assigned a playoff game, and according to Phil Simms, actually graded out as the best officiating crew in the league, despite what happened in Denver in Week Two.

All of that's fine. Ed Hochuli can still be a good official, despite the one massive goof-up, and if he and his crew battled back from that to perform well, I'm happy for them. I love a good redemption story.

But if Hochuli and his crew can screw up that badly and still be the best, what's that say about the second-best team out there? What did they do, officiate a game in which they decided that field goals should be worth 19 points, sacks worth 162 points, and touchdowns worth zero points, but free ice cream sandwiches for everyone on the offense? Did the third-best officiating crew enact a policy in Week 14 dictating that anyone who commits a holding penalty gets stabbed in the eye with an ice pick?

3. Tarvaris Jackson. The difference between the Eagles and Vikings was the difference between Donovan McNabb and Tarvaris Jackson. Both defenses played well, and we'll call Westbrook vs. Peterson a wash. But one quarterback was experienced, poised and made plays, and the other struggled with the atmosphere and the pass rush all day long.

The good news for T-Jack is that late in the season, he did show some signs that he might improve enough to one day be the guy for the Vikings. I wish him the best with that.

2. The Wildcat. Ronnie Brown: 12 carries, 19 yards. Ricky Williams: four carries, 17 yards. Lousaka Polite actually had a team-best yards-per-carry average of 5.0, with 15 yards on three carries.

The playoff version of the Wildcat was just sort of written in an obsolete vernacular. The Ravens were all over it and nothing fooled anyone. I still gave Tony Sparano a ton of credit for using it so heavily in the regular season, because it did prove to be an advantage then. But I think today proved that it's not a sustainable type of thing you can rely on against a good defense in the playoffs.

1. Whoever didn't do anything about the Cardinals figuring out the Falcons snap count. I don't know how this happens. For an entire game, the Cardinals defensive linemen are beating the Falcons offensive linemen off the ball, and at no point does anyone on the Falcons coaching staff figure out what it is that's tipping them off? Inexcusable.

Chad did a great Brett Favre impression: Choking in the playoffs, girl-like arm, poor decision-making, terrible interceptions, crying like a sissy. Now all he has to do start taking painkillers like candy.

Yeah...it was nice of Ed Hocolli and his crew to miss 2 helmet to helmet hits from the Ravens and a blatant facemask tackle on a early key 3rd down, (all three in a row) Great Job guys...hope you make it to the super bowl and [profane]k that up.
Hats off to Chad Pennington and the Miami Dolphins for a wonderfully successful season IMO!

Tarvaris is a back up quaterback and will never be the guy --- if Minnesota would have stuck with Gus F. they would be playing the panthers next week.

What about Peyton Manning? He again didn;t lead his team back during the playoffs....and he only had ONE real TD drive in the first quarter...the other was a TD where they caught the Bolts sleeping...not really a drive...

No Chad took Favre and went above and beyond. He threw four picks and tried to throw downfield when he cant throw 20+ yards and when Ed Reed was in the area. Just shows any QB is horrible when they have someone in their face the whole time. Got to give credit to the Ravens.

Nothing about the Colts? At all? No mention of their weakness in the running game getting exposed and their overreliance on Manning?
If anything, the people all giddy about a Manning-vs-Manning Super Bowl get my vote.

I have to agree about those stupid Wendy's commercials. All they did was hire 3 guys to say 3conomics a lot, where one guy thinks he's SOOOOOO smart and blah blah blah blah blek. Makes me wanna puke.

Well Well Well, the Dolphins get a taste of why the Jets had to get rid of "No-Arm" Chad. He is fine and dandy until his team gets down double digits and has to drop back to pass like a real QB does. I like CHAD for his heart, but I'd still take Favre's INT's due to his ring and ability to actually throw a football(even at 39). Brett is a Roller Coaster, you just may be able to ride his highs thru the playoffs(unless you gets his lows). However, CHAD is like the DUMBO ride, which doesn't go to high and gets old after awhile.

TRAVIS JACKSON IS A BEGINNER QUARTERBACK.
BRAD CHILDRESS IS A STUPID COACH.
Vikings are a very talented football team that Ziggy Wilf spend lots money but for some reason, the vikings need a quarterback and a decent coach. There will be no more vikings after 2011.

The biggest loser of the weekend was LT. Even if he's done for the playoffs, his value will never be higher to help the Rivers/ Sproles Chargers become a dynasty.

You forgot the #1 overall most useless "person"... the officiating team in San Diego. They called enough penalties in that game at "just the right moment" to give away that game in a way that should never be allowed. Neither team truly deserved to win that game, although both defenses did play pretty well and do deserve some props for that... but Mr. Hothead QB most definitely did not... but the officials truly did "win" it, or at least decide the "official" winners. Not by any kind of Hotchouli-level screwup, of course, but by all the little crap calls they either got wrong when they did call or failed to call when they should have... especially the Sproles "facemask" that iced the game, but there were plenty more beforehand... the catch that was ruled incomplete on Harrison, the out-of-bounds catch that was ruled a catch for Jackson (I think)... etc etc etc...
It's well past time we start allowing coaches to challenge penalties. Both for ones that are missed and to remove ones that are wrong. And giving them at least a few more challenges as well.

The Miami Dolphins are the worst team in the history of the NFL. Now that everybody knows about the Wildcat offense, Miami will not be able to score any points. Miami will revert back to 1-15...

Manning certainly didn't do anything to lose the game for the Colts (see: 1, 2, 3 and 5). He was very 'ho-hum' but credit that to the Charger secondary - which were torched throughout the season.

the vikings are what we thought they were. I noticed at one point T-jack was 10 of 28. A NFL starting quarterback, on a playoff team.... wow. I give big ups to Donovan McNabb. They way he handled all the media and fan drama about his performance/ future could fold some nfl players. I would guess he will be an eagle one more year. Just ask the vikings what its like having an unproven, easily rattled, young QB in crunch time.

Hey Mookie- It wouldn't have mattered if it was Gus F. or Tavaris, heck Tommy Kramer could have played just as well. We Viking fans should be use to losing, it happens year after year. As far as the Eagles, this reminded me of the Atlanta game- turn it over and don't move it when you have to. When does AP get sick of sitting out every second half?! He'll be gone to some other team and end up a Super Bowl winner in the next 2 years just like Randy Moss did. Mike Tice got the boot after a subpar second season, how long do they give "Chilly" and his pathetic offensive coordinator?! Ever notice how all the Minnesota coaches and players have moved on and are on winning teams?! Look at Mewelde Moore and Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh! We'll see what happens in the off season. I won't hold my breath anymore.

In Fairness to Pennington on one of those interceptions his receiver fell down...
But yea, Manning after being named MVP for no good reason deserved spot #5. How many times have the Chargers of all defenses figured him out?

I would say the least valuable are all those writers who voted for the end-of-season award winners, all who were eliminated from the playoffs:
MVP: exposed as just another quarterback under pressure.
Rookie of the Year: Played like a rookie.
Coach of the year: Lost to probably the worst team in the playoffs.
Comeback player of the year: 'nuf said already to hang Chad.
And finally, not one vote for:
    Ed Reed for MVP.
Harbaugh for coach of the year.
Joe Flacco for Rookie of the year
