Yankees, Cano still not close in talks
The highest-profile free agent on the market and the baseball team with the deepest pockets are not close to reaching a contract agreement.
Representatives for second baseman Robinson Cano met with New York Yankees officials on Tuesday but made little progress, according to multiple media reports.
Cano, 31, reportedly wants a 10-year contract worth in excess of $300 million. The Yankees reportedly offered him seven years and approximately $160 million.
According to ESPN.com, Tuesday's meeting included Cano's agent, Brodie Van Wagenen of Creative Artists Agency; a representative of Jay Z's Roc Nation, which also is guiding Cano; Yankees general manager Brian Cashman and team president Randy Levine.
"There's still a pretty big gap," a source told ESPN.com. "But (the Cano side) did move a little."
The past five seasons, Cano batted a composite .314 with a .369 on-base percentage, a .530 slugging percentage and averages of 28.4 homers and 102.6 RBIs. He is also a two-time Gold Glove winner.
