White Sox pitcher Danks does on disabled list

Chicago White Sox pitcher John Danks will be placed on the 15-day disabled list on Friday because of shoulder soreness, MLB.com reported Thursday.

Jose Quintana will be called up from Triple-A Charlotte to take Danks' spot in the rotation while he's on the DL. Quintana is scheduled to be the White Sox starting pitcher Friday against Cleveland.

The left-handed Danks, 27, felt soreness behind his left shoulder when he played catch on Sunday after throwing 6 1/3 shutout innings in a Saturday victory over the Cubs.

"Nothing serious," White Sox manager Robin Ventura told MLB.com. "We're just getting out in front of it and making sure we take care of him."

Danks said he could continue to pitch.

"I'm no doctor, but I told them I was prepared to pitch tomorrow," Danks said. "I still feel like I probably could, but in talking to Kenny (Williams, the general manager) and Robin and Herm (Schneider, the trainer), it's better to be safe than sorry. I'll try to get everything completely right and then pick it back up."

Danks has a 3-4 record and a 5.70 ERA in nine starts this season.

His DL stint is retroactive to Saturday, which means he could pitch again May 30.
