Week 10 NFC Targets/Touches

Nick Mensio dives into the matchups and advises which players to start and sit for Week 2

In case you missed it, the AFC Targets and Touches column can be found here.

From here on out, this column will only have players’ six most recent games, regardless if they were active or on a bye. Targets and touches will be in descending order of games played.

All targets and touches data is compiled from Pro Football Reference.

Note: if a player has an asterisk next to a number in their data set that indicates the player was injured during the game. Also, this data will stick to fantasy relevant players meaning that running backs and wide receivers that only see one target or touch per-game will not be included.

Atlanta Falcons

Targets: Julio Jones (6, 10, 10, 17, 13, 17), Devonta Freeman (6, 8, 10, 3, 8, 10), Roddy White (4, 4, 4, 4, 3, 2), Leonard Hankerson (8, 4, 6, 0*, 0, 0), Tevin Coleman (0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 0), Jacob Tamme (0, 10, 5, 5, 12, 10)

RB Touches: Devonta Freeman (19, 34, 21, 27, 27, 20) and Tevin Coleman (0, 2, 4, 3, 4, 1)

Red zone Targets: Julio Jones (0, 0, 1, 3, 1, 3), Roddy White (0, 1, 1, 0, 1, 0), Devonta Freeman (0, 1, 1, 0, 3, 2), Leonard Hankerson (1, 2, 1, 0, 0, 0), Tevin Coleman (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Jacob Tamme (0, 0, 0, 2, 2, 1)

Red zone Carries: Devonta Freeman (2, 5, 0, 3, 8, 1) and Tevin Coleman (0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Desmond Trufant 8, 3, 2, 2, 3, 3 (3-47, 2-16, 1-19, 1-6, 2-41-1, 2-21) and Jalen Collins 9, 2, 1, 7 (4-81, 0-0, 0-0, 4-56-1)

Analysis: For those even slightly concerned about Devonta Freeman after his 12 carry, 12 rushing yards performance in Week 9 against the 49ers, the following stat should calm your nerves: Week 9 marked the first time in which Freeman averaged less than 4.2 yards per carry in a single game since Week 2, before Freeman was the full-time starter. Sure, the Falcons continually funnel action to Julio Jones and Freeman and don’t really have a solid No. 3 option on offense, which could hamper their overall efficiency. But the fact of the matter is Freeman has been fantastic to-date and is averaging a league-leading 24 touches per-game. With Le'Veon Bell out for the year, Freeman is easily still the No. 1 running back in PPR leagues.

Carolina Panthers

Targets: Greg Olsen (11, 6, 11, 5, 12, 7), Jonathan Stewart (1, 0, 1, 1, 2, 6), Ted Ginn (6, 3, 4, 8, 10, 4), Devin Funchess (4, 2, 6, 2, 1, 4), Corey Brown (0, 3, 3, 5, 5, 4)

RB Touches: Jonathan Stewart (14, 10, 21, 24, 25, 21)

Red zone Targets: Greg Olsen (5, 2, 0, 0, 1, 1), Ted Ginn (0, 2, 0, 0, 0, 0), Devin Funchess (1, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1), Corey Brown (0, 0, 0, 2, 1, 1)

Red zone Carries: Jonathan Stewart (2, 1, 5, 5, 4, 3), Cam Newton (3, 2, 1, 1, 4, 2), Mike Tolbert (4, 2, 0, 2, 0, 1)

CBs Thrown At: Josh Norman 6, 8, 2, 2, 7, 5 (4-43, 2-31, 2-(-2), 1-3, 3-29, 2-49), Bene Benwikere 8, 5, 3, 8, 7, 12 (6-50, 4-39, 1-2, 7-62, 6-69-1, 5-51-2), Charles Tillman 9, 3, 6, 5, 7, 10 (8-77, 2-15, 2-17, 2-17, 3-44, 5-99)

Analysis: 21-year-old rookie Devin Funchess finally came around a bit in Week 9 posting a 3-71-1 line on his four targets, but he’s still seeing a marginal amount of the Panthers’ snaps. His snap shares over the past four weeks are as follows: 27.3%, 28.1%, 14.3%, and 26.5%. Perhaps a solid Week 9 performance will persuade Panthers' coaches to let Funchess become a bit more involved in the offense in the coming weeks.

Chicago Bears

Targets: Alshon Jeffery (0, 0, 0, 11, 15, 16), Matt Forte (3, 4, 7, 5, 4*, 0), Martellus Bennett (5, 13, 11, 11, 5, 9), Eddie Royal (3, 10, 0, 5, 3, 0), Marquess Wilson (5, 2, 9, 8, 3, 3), Jeremy Langford (0, 0, 2, 2, 1, 4)

RB Touches: Matt Forte (20, 29, 23, 27, 14*, 0), Jeremy Langford (0, 1, 3, 6, 12, 21), Ka’Deem Carey (7)

Red zone Targets: Alshon Jeffery (0, 0, 0, 2, 2, 3), Matt Forte (0, 0, 1, 2, 0, 0), Eddie Royal (0, 2, 0, 0, 0, 0), Martellus Bennett (0, 2, 1, 3, 0, 2), Marquess Wilson (0, 0, 1, 4, 0, 0, 0)

Red zone Carries: Matt Forte (0, 3, 0, 0, 0, 0), Jeremy Langford (0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 3), Ka’Deem Carey (1)

CBs Thrown At: Kyle Fuller 2, 2, 3, 9, 6, 4 (1-4, 1-17, 2-15, 8-60-2, 2-24, 3-20) and Tracy Porter 10, 8, 8, 7, 4 (5-58, 4-61-1, 5-71-1, 3-43, 3-33)

Analysis: In his four active games, Alshon Jeffery has averaged 36.1% of the Bears’ targets. That is the highest target percentage among receivers in the league through Week 9. Mike Evans (35.1%), Antonio Brown (34.7%), Julio Jones (33.5%), and DeAndre Hopkins (31.2%) round out the top-5 target share leaders.

Red zone Targets: Dez Bryant (0, 1), Jason Witten (0, 0, 2, 1, 0, 0), Cole Beasley (0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 2), Terrance Williams (0, 5, 1, 0, 0, 1), Gavin Escobar (0, 0, 2, 0, 0, 0), Darren McFadden (0, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0)

Red zone Carries: Darren McFadden (3, 0, 1, 3, 1, 4)

CBs Thrown At: Brandon Carr 7, 8, 1, 5, 7, 4 (5-54-1, 8-57-1, 1-16, 4-73, 4-45, 4-17) and Morris Claiborne 11, 11, 4, 2, 4, 5 (6-77, 7-67, 4-120-1, 0-0, 3-35, 2-36)

Analysis: Darren McFadden has secured 70.7%, 66.7%, and 100% of Dallas’ running back carries over the last three weeks and he is second only to Devonta Freeman (80.6%) for the highest percentage of team carries since Week 7 (76%). After cutting maligned running back Joseph Randle, Christine Michael didn't even play a snap in Week 9 against the Eagles.

Detroit Lions – On Bye in Week 9

Targets: Calvin Johnson (13, 11, 7, 9, 7, 10), Eric Ebron (5, 3*, 0, 0, 5, 5), Golden Tate (7, 4, 18, 9, 6, 7), Ameer Abdullah (5, 5, 2, 4, 0, 2), Theo Riddick (10, 5, 13, 6, 4, 7), Joique Bell (1, 0, 0, 0, 2, 1), Lance Moore (6, 3, 3, 8, 6, 3)

Red zone Targets: Randall Cobb (4, 3, 0, 0, 0, 3), James Jones, (0, 0, 0, 2, 0, 1), Davante Adams (0*, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1), Eddie Lacy (0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0), Ty Montgomery (1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0), Richard Rodgers (0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 2), James Starks (0, 0, 0, 2, 0, 2)

Red zone Carries: Eddie Lacy (1, 2, 0, 1, 2, 1) and James Starks (1, 1, 0, 3, 0, 2)

CBs Thrown At: Sam Shields 1, 5, 4, 7, 14, 0* (1-0, 4-61, 1-7, 1-10, 9-117, 0-0) – Inactive in Week 9, Casey Hayward 8, 2, 6, 7, 10, 0 (7-67-1, 1-1, 2-5, 4-54, 7-135, 0-0), Damarious Randall 8, 8, 2, 7, 6, 8 (3-77, 4-70, 2-28, 4-40, 5-72, 4-88-1)

Analysis: Here are James Jones’ target shares when Davante Adams has played 75% or more of the Packers’ snaps: 17.4% (4 targets), 9.7% (3), 9.1% (2), and 12.5% (6). Here are Adams’ target shares in his four games with 75-plus percent of snaps: 34.8% (8 targets), 16.1% (5), 9.1% (2), and 22.9% (11).

Minnesota Vikings

Targets: Stefon Diggs (9, 9, 9, 12, 5), Mike Wallace (4, 10, 9, 5, 4, 6), Kyle Rudolph (5, 4, 5, 2, 2, 2), Jarius Wright (4, 0, 3, 6, 2, 3), Adrian Peterson (0, 6, 1, 3, 2, 2)

Red zone Targets: Kyle Rudolph (1, 1, 2, 1, 0, 0), Adrian Peterson (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Jarius Wright (0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0), Mike Wallace (0, 2, 2, 1, 0, 0), Stefon Diggs (2, 0, 1, 0, 0)

Red zone Carries: Adrian Peterson (6, 0, 5, 3, 0, 3)

CBs Thrown At: Xavier Rhodes 5*, 5, 9, 5, 9, 2 (3-79-1, 4-72, 4-70-1, 4-40-1, 6-45-1, 1-10), Terence Newman 8, 7, 5, 0, 9, 4 (6-42, 4-63, 2-11, 0-0, 6-76, 3-79), Captain Munnerlyn 2, 5, 4, 6, 4, 7 (2-45, 4-36, 2-1, 3-55, 4-33, 4-16)

Analysis: Adrian Peterson (19 targets) and Chris Ivory (18 targets) are the only two running backs inside of the current top-12 PPR scorers at the position to have less than 20 total targets on the year.

New Orleans Saints

Targets: Brandin Cooks (8, 9, 5, 13, 8, 10), Mark Ingram (7, 3, 3, 2, 5, 5), Marques Colston (5, 5, 0, 3, 9, 3), C.J. Spiller (5, 4, 5, 6, 4, 2), Ben Watson (3, 5, 12, 5, 10, 5), Willie Snead (11, 5, 7, 8, 10)

RB Touches: Mark Ingram (23, 14, 23, 16, 20, 26) and C.J. Spiller (7, 6, 7, 10, 6, 3)

Red zone Targets: Brandin Cooks (1, 1, 0, 1, 0, 0), Mark Ingram (1, 1, 0, 0, 0, 1), Willie Snead (0, 2, 0, 1, 1, 0), Marques Colston (1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0), Ben Watson (1, 2, 1, 0, 1, 0)

Red zone Carries: Mark Ingram (4, 1, 5, 3, 3, 4) and C.J. Spiller (0, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Brandon Browner 5, 7, 5, 4, 8, 10 (3-78, 5-54, 4-47-1, 2-27-1, 6-55, 7-85) and Delvin Breaux 9, 7, 6, 10, 10, 8 (2-41-1, 6-58, 2-20, 4-150-2, 9-138-3, 3-32-1)

Analysis: I am not quite sure why the Saints added C.J. Spiller this past offseason. In their first game without Khiry Robinson (broken tibia), Spiller received just three touches and played six snaps. Spiller will have to be involved more often moving forward because Mark Ingram can’t continue to see 88.3% of snaps like he did in Week 9, but the Saints’ usage of Spiller this year has been questionable at best.

New York Giants

Targets: Odell Beckham (12, 11, 8, 6, 9, 17), Shane Vereen (0, 8, 4, 3, 9, 4), Rueben Randle (6, 6*, 6, 5, 9, 5), Larry Donnell (7, 7, 5, 5, 1*, 0), Rashad Jennings (2, 4, 3, 0, 3, 1), Andre Williams (1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1) Dwayne Harris (6, 8, 4, 2, 7, 3), Orleans Darkwa (1, 0*, 0)

RB Touches: Rashad Jennings (9, 15, 16, 5, 12, 13), Shane Vereen (5, 13, 5, 5, 10, 10), Andre Williams (11, 3, 5, 4, 5, 8), Orleans Darkwa (8, 4, 6)

Red zone Targets: Odell Beckham (1, 4, 1, 0, 3, 1), Larry Donnell (1, 2, 0, 1, 0, 0), Rueben Randle (2, 0, 0, 0, 1, 1), Shane Vereen (0, 1, 0, 0, 2, 1), Dwayne Harris (1, 1, 0, 0, 2, 0)

Red zone Carries: Rashad Jennings (2, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0), Andre Williams (0, 2, 0, 0, 2, 1), Shane Vereen (0, 2, 0, 1, 0, 3), Orleans Darkwa (1, 2, 1)

CBs Thrown At: Prince Amukamara 10, 4, 8, 9, 5 (7-52, 3-49, 4-54, 4-58, 3-16-1) – Inactive in Week 6-9 (Pectoral tear) and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie 1, 5, 5, 6, 7, 11 (0-0, 3-19, 5-62, 2-38, 4-31, 4-26)

Analysis: It’s pretty amazing that the Giants’ have just skipped over a two or a three-man running back by committee and have broken new ground with a four-headed RBBC. Here is the way snaps were split amongst the Giants' backs in Week 9: Shane Vereen (28), Rashad Jennings (23), Andre Williams (14), and Orleans Darkwa (10). Continue to avoid this backfield in fantasy decisions outside of deep 14- and 16-team leagues.

Philadelphia Eagles

Targets: Jordan Matthews (8, 8, 7, 11, 7, 12), Zach Ertz (2, 3, 7, 7, 8, 6), Darren Sproles (6, 3, 2, 2, 10, 3), DeMarco Murray (0, 2, 8, 4, 4, 7), Nelson Agholor (4, 4, 1*, 0, 0, 0), Ryan Mathews (4, 0, 3, 1, 3, 1)

RB Touches: DeMarco Murray (0, 10, 27, 26, 20, 24), Darren Sproles (15, 4, 6, 3, 8, 7), Ryan Mathews (27, 5, 11, 10, 9, 11)

Red zone Targets: Jordan Matthews (1, 0, 2, 0, 1, 2), DeMarco Murray (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Zach Ertz (0, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0), Nelson Agholor (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Darren Sproles (1, 1, 0, 0, 1, 1), Ryan Mathews (0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0)

Red zone Carries: DeMarco Murray (0, 1, 5, 1, 3, 2), Ryan Mathews (3, 0, 2, 1, 0, 2), Darren Sproles (3, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1)

CBs Thrown At: Byron Maxwell 9, 6, 0*, 4, 5, 6 (6-86-1, 6-75 0-0, 2-39, 4-38. 3-18) and Nolan Carroll 5, 9, 9, 11, 8, 7 (4-26, 5-49, 6-79, 6-113, 5-39, 5-84)

Analysis: Perhaps the bye week was exactly what Jordan Matthews needed to fix his drop issues and inconsistent play – or perhaps we shouldn’t overreact to just one game. Either way, Week 9 was easily Matthews’ best game of the season, converting his 12 targets in to a 9-133-1 receiving line. The Eagles’ next three matchups are against teams that rank 20th or lower in Football Outsiders’ Pass Defense DVOA metric (Miami, Tampa Bay, and Detroit). We’ll see if Matthews corrected his issues. He should have every opportunity for production against soft secondaries over the next three games.

San Francisco 49ers

Targets: Anquan Boldin (7, 12, 9, 7, 0, 0), Torrey Smith (5, 2, 6, 1, 5, 4), Carlos Hyde (1, 5, 2, 0, 0, 0), Quinton Patton (2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 5), Shaun Draughn (5), Kendall Gaskins (3, 0)

RB Touches: Carlos Hyde (9, 22, 23, 11, 0, 0), Shaun Draughn (20), Kendall Gaskins (7, 7)

Red zone Targets: Anquan Boldin (1, 5, 3, 1, 0, 0), Carlos Hyde (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Torrey Smith (1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Quinton Patton (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1)

Red zone Carries: Carlos Hyde (1, 5, 5, 0, 0, 0), Shaun Draughn (3), Kendall Gaskins (0, 1)

CBs Thrown At: Tramaine Brock 8, 4, 7, 10, 4, 5 (4-65-1, 3-15, 4-90, 4-57, 3-80-1, 2-14) – Inactive in Week 9, Kenneth Acker 6, 7, 6, 5, 2, 2 (3-38, 5-98, 3-37, 2-41-1, 1-7, 1-66-1) – Inactive in Week 9, Jimmie Ward 7, 9, 6, 1, 3, 9 (5-44, 7-53, 6-47-1, 1-4, 3-25, 6-36)

Analysis: Continue to avoid all 49ers players for fantasy decisions, unless you’re completely desperate.

Seattle Seahawks – On Bye in Week 9

Targets: Doug Baldwin (3, 4, 3, 4, 3, 6), Jimmy Graham (8, 5, 5, 12, 5, 10), Marshawn Lynch (1*, 0, 0, 3, 0, 2), Tyler Lockett (1, 5, 5, 2, 5, 4), Fred Jackson (2, 4*, 3, 2, 4, 1), Luke Willson (0, 3, 3, 1, 0, 2), Jermaine Kearse (6, 2, 3, 3, 4, 1), Thomas Rawls (1, 1, 0, 0, 2, 0)

RB Touches: Marshawn Lynch (6*, 0, 0, 18, 27, 23), Fred Jackson (4, 5, 5, 2, 5, 1), Thomas Rawls (16, 18, 23, 1, 8, 4)

Red zone Targets: Jimmy Graham (1, 0, 1, 1, 1, 0), Marshawn Lynch (0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 0), Fred Jackson (0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0), Doug Baldwin (0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0), Jermaine Kearse (1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0)

Red zone Carries: Marshawn Lynch (0*, 0, 0, 5, 6, 6), Fred Jackson (0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0), Russell Wilson (0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 2), Thomas Rawls (1, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Richard Sherman 3, 3, 6, 4, 0, 5 (1-13, 1-9, 2-21, 5-60, 3-51, 0-0, 1-15) and Cary Williams 0, 8, 7, 7, 1, 1 (0-0, 4-28, 5-73-1, 5-77, 1-27, 1-3)

CBs Thrown At: Trumaine Johnson 5, 9, 6, 7, 11, 6 (4-41, 7-84, 5-71-1, 7-65, 6-56, 2-8), Janoris Jenkins 9, 9, 1, 5, 6, 6 (8-77, 6-62, 0-0, 3-17, 2-11, 4-75), Lamarcus Joyner 3, 6, 9, 4, 3, 3 (2-11, 5-63, 6-97-1, 3-21, 2-15, 1-7)

Analysis: Todd Gurley probably has the safest floor of any running back in the league at this point. Here are his PPR finishes since he became the full-time starter in Week 4: RB11, RB19, bye, RB3, RB1, and RB11. He gets to face a Bears' defense ranked 31st in Football Outsiders' Rush Defense DVOA metric at home this week.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Targets: Mike Evans (17, 8, 5, 12, 9, 19), Vincent Jackson (4, 15, 3, 2*, 0, 0), Charles Sims (2, 5, 4, 3, 4, 2), Doug Martin (0, 5, 3, 3, 1, 4)

Red zone Targets: Mike Evans (0, 2, 1, 1, 1, 3, 2), Vincent Jackson (0, 3, 0, 0, 0, 0), Charles Sims (0, 1, 0, 0, 0, 0), Doug Martin (0, 0, 1, 1, 0, 1)

Red zone Carries: Doug Martin (0, 2, 5, 3, 4, 4) and Charles Sims (1, 1, 3, 4, 1, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Sterling Moore 7 (4-46), Jude Adjei-Barimah 7 (5-38), Alterraun Verner 3, 0, 4, 1, 8, 6 (1-11, 0-0, 4-64, 1-19, 6-49, 3-21)

Analysis: As mentioned in the AFC Targets and Touches Report, Mike Evans (eight red zone targets) and Demaryius Thomas (seven red zone targets) are the only two wide receivers to have seven or more targets inside of the 20-yard line without scoring. Granted, Jameis Winston is only completing 37.8% of his passes in the red zone, ranking 37th out of 42 qualified passers – Evans is still due for some positive touchdown regression sooner rather than later.

Washington

Targets: Jordan Reed (9, 8, 0, 0, 13, 7), DeSean Jackson (6), Pierre Garcon (12, 8, 8, 8, 6, 8), Matt Jones (0, 0, 2, 0, 4, 3), Alfred Morris (0, 3, 0, 1, 1, 0), Jamison Crowder (6, 12, 8, 9, 5, 8), Chris Thompson (11, 3, 7, 10, 0, 4)

RB Touches: Alfred Morris (6, 19, 8, 12, 7, 4), Matt Jones (11, 7, 12, 0, 12, 13), Chris Thompson (8, 9, 11, 0, 0, 2)

Red zone Targets: Jordan Reed (1, 2, 0, 0, 4, 3), DeSean Jackson (1) Pierre Garcon (0, 3, 1, 2, 1, 1), Chris Thompson (2, 1, 2, 1, 0, 1), Jamison Crowder (0, 3, 1, 1, 1, 0), Alfred Morris (0, 1, 0, 1, 0, 0)

Red zone Carries: Alfred Morris (0, 2, 3, 3, 0, 0), Matt Jones (2, 3, 3, 0, 1, 2), Chris Thompson (0, 0, 0, 3, 0, 0)

CBs Thrown At: Chris Culliver 0*, 4, 4, 0*, 4 (0-0*, 3-22, 2-84-1, 0-0, 3-67), Bashaud Breeland 10, 2, 12, 6, 7, 3 (8-125-2, 1-9, 4-39, 4-58-2, 6-97, 1-17), Will Blackmon 1, 2, 4, 3, 7, 6 (0-0, 2-31, 2-41, 2-27, 3-75-1, 3-30-1)

Analysis: DeSean Jackson wasn’t necessarily limited coming off of his hamstring injury in Week 9. He played 84.7% of snaps and received six targets, securing three for 15 yards. Jackson will continue to re-acclimate in Washington’s offense in the coming weeks. Washington’s remaining schedule shouldn’t be overly prohibitive for passing and receiving production as they close out the year with: the Saints, Panthers, Giants, Cowboys, Bears, Bills, Eagles, and Cowboys (Week 17).
