Virginia QB Sims leaving school
Virginia quarterback Phillip Sims is leaving the school after he was deemed ineligible.
Coach Mike London made the announcement through a statement released by the school Friday.
Sims, who transferred from Alabama, will leave Virginia after his summer school session ends.
"Phillip did not make the commitment he needed to succeed here," London said.
Sims started four games for Virginia last year and played in 12 games overall. He completed 132 of 231 passes for 1,426 yards with nine touchdowns and four interceptions.
After starring at Oscar Smith High School in Chesapeake, Va., Sims began his collegiate career at Alabama. He redshirted his freshman year and was a backup during the 2011 national championship season. He then transferred to Virginia to be closer to his family.
Sims was competing for the Cavaliers' starting job this season. He was listed as third on the depth chart after spring practice concluded.
"I appreciate his efforts last season," London said. "He is a very talented young man who is blessed with some extraordinary athletic abilities. I still believe Phillip Sims can and will be a successful person. We will do what we can to assist Phillip in continuing his academic and athletic opportunities elsewhere."
