Te'o to miss opener for Chargers

San Diego linebacker Manti Te'o will not make his NFL debut in the Chargers' season opener against the Houston Texans on Monday night.

Te'o was listed as out on the team's injury report Saturday. A sprained foot has bothered the rookie from Notre Dame for the past month and prevented him from practicing. The injury occurred during the Chargers' first preseason game on Aug. 8.

The Chargers are now hoping that a Week 2 or Week 3 return are possible for Te'o, according to NFL.com. Te'o was seen during training camp in a walking boot.

Bront Bird is expected to start at Te'o's linebacker spot against the Texans.

There was some better injury news for the Chargers. Wide receivers Malcom Floyd (knee) and Eddie Royal (chest, concussion) are listed as probable for the opener.
