Teixeira to miss World Baseball Classic with forearm injury

A strained right forearm will keep New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira from playing in the World Baseball Classic for Team USA.

Teixeira was injured while hitting off a tee in Glendale, Ariz., before an exhibition game Tuesday against the Chicago White Sox, X-rays were negative, but he will be sidelined seven to 10 days, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi told MLB.com in Florida that Teixeira felt discomfort in his right hand and wrist and said more tests are planned. Ben Zobrist replaced Teixeira at first during Tuesday's practice.

As a result of the injury, Teixeira was taken off the Team USA roster and will be replaced, FOX Sports.com reported. A possible replacement could be Philadelphia Phillies slugger Ryan Howard, who has hit three homers already this spring.

The U.S. team plays its first game Friday against Mexico at Chase Field in Phoenix.
