Sharks obtain rights to Brad Stuart from Detroit

The San Jose Sharks have obtained the rights to defenseman Brad Stuart from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for forward Andrew Murray and a conditional draft pick.

Stuart is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent July 1, so the Sharks have exclusive negotiating rights to Stuart until then,

"We are very happy to acquire Brad's rights prior to July 1 and are hopeful that we come to an agreement on a new contract," Sharks general manager Doug Wilson told NHL.com. "Brad is a player we are very familiar with -- a physical, team-first defenseman who is tough to play against, which is exactly the kind of mentality we want our team to possess."

Stuart, 32, had 21 points (6 goals, 15 assists) and a plus-16 rating for Detroit this past season.

He had played his first five NHL seasons with the Sharks.
