Sacred Heart hires Bobby Valentine as AD

Sacred Heart University confirmed Friday that former Boston Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine will become the school's athletics director.

A formal announcement is set for Tuesday in Fairfield, Conn.

Valentine landed the job about about five months after he was fired as Red Sox manager. In one season in Boston, the Red Sox posted a 69-93 record, the worst in 47 years. Valentine also served as the manager of the Texas Rangers (1985-1992) and New York Mets (1996-2002) after spending eight years as a utility player in the majors.

After he was fired by the Red Sox, Valentine went to work as director of public safety in his native Stamford, Conn. He recently was signed by NBC Sports Radio as a part-time weekly co-host.

Valentine will replace Don Cook, who is retiring as Sacred Heart AD on July 1.
