Looks like New York Jets fans and some of us in the media aren’t the only ones who think it’s worth the Jets taking a long look at second-year quarterback Bryce Petty.

New York brass does too.

As first reported by Chris Moore of WFAN and confirmed by several others since, the Jets will start Petty on Sunday when they face the Los Angeles Rams instead of veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Fitzpatrick sprained his MCL last week against the Miami Dolphins, an injury that isn’t considered serious. But Fitzpatrick doesn’t just have a balky knee; he also has an NFL-high 13 interceptions this season against eight touchdown passes.

ESPN Jets reporter Rich Cimini wrote this about the decision to go with Petty for Week 10: “Jets coach Todd Bowles’ decision to start Bryce Petty essentially came down to this: He preferred a healthy, but unproven Petty over the sore-kneed Ryan Fitzpatrick even though he repeatedly stated Fitzpatrick gives them the best chance to win. The downside is minimal for Bowles, whose popularity is sinking because of the way he has handled the QB situation. The fans get their wish; they wanted Petty.”

A fourth-round pick out of Baylor in 2015, Petty made his first-ever regular-season appearance last week when Fitzpatrick left the game briefly. He played four snaps, was 2-for-2 for 19 yards, and got the Jets within field-goal range.
