Report: Suspended coach Gregg Williams may soon join Titans

The SportsXchange

Former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, who remains suspended for his involvement in the so-called BountyGate, could soon join the Tennessee Titans, according to ESPN.com.

Citing NFL sources, the report said Williams has already met with the Titans and "is on the verge of becoming the Titans' assistant head coach."

However, Williams cannot join the Titans or any other team until NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reinstates him from the one-year suspension he has been serving. The ESPN report said such a move could come as early as this week as the league gears up for the Super Bowl in, ironically, New Orleans.

If hired, this would be Williams' second stint with the Titans, having previously served as an assistant coach there from 1997 to 2000, when he served under then Titans coach Jeff Fisher, now coach of the St. Louis Rams.

Williams had been hired by Fisher again prior to this past season to be the Rams' defensive coordinator before he was suspended. Because he was unable to coach, Williams was not retained at the end of this season.

Williams has the approval of Titans head coach Mike Munchak, as well, according to the report.
