Steelers fire special teams coordinator

In a move that seems odd with the start of the regular season approaching, the Pittsburgh Steelers fired special teams coordinator Al Everest, the team announced Thursday.

Assistant special teams coach Amos Jones will assume responsibility for all special teams, a Steelers statement said.

"We are continually evaluating our coaching staff and support staff, and we have decided to go in a different direction with respect to the coaching of our special teams," head coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement. "I want to thank Al for his contributions and efforts, and I wish him well in the future."

The Steelers hired Everest in January 2010, just a few days after the San Francisco 49ers fired him.

He has 15 years of experience as a special teams coordinator in the NFL.
