Report: Smith prepared to sit out 2013

The head coaching opportunities for former Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith are disappearing, and he is prepared to sit out the 2013 season rather than take a defensive coordinator position if he fails to land a head-coaching position this year, ESPNChicago.com reported.

Smith was a hot commodity after he got fired following the Bears' 10-6 season, and many assumed he would land one of the other head-coaching positions that became available.

He was interviewed for head-coaching jobs in Philadelphia, San Diego and Buffalo, but each selected other candidates.

Other vacancies in Arizona and Jacksonville were filled Thursday by Bruce Arians and Gus Bradley, respectively.

Smith will receive a reported salary of $5 million from the Bears in 2013 if he sits out the upcoming season.

Smith was lauded for his work as a defensive coordinator before being named Chicago's head coach, but apparently he will not take a job as a defensive coordinator for the 2013 season.

He will then wait to see if an opportunity arises for the 2014 season.
