Report: Jets have Revis trade offer from Buccaneers
John Idzik worked closely with Mark Dominik in the scouting department of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, long before each landed a general manager's job in the NFL.
But Idzik, in his first season running the personnel department as GM of the New York Jets, and Dominik -- general manager of the Buccaneers -- could rekindle their partnership briefly to complete a much-discussed trade for cornerback Darrelle Revis.
ProFootballTalk.com identified the Buccaneers as the team that has made the Jets a standing offer to acquire Revis, whose standing with the team has been a point of great consternation in the Big Apple since Idzik arrived to replace ousted GM Mike Tannenbaum.
Revis, who has a $9 million salary cap figure in 2013 as part of a four-year, $46 million deal he signed after a 35-day holdout in 2010, will reportedly demand a new long-term contract if he's traded. Revis said in February he was "stunned" to hear he was on the market. Head coach Rex Ryan and Idzik told reporters last month that there were no plans to make a trade involving the All-Pro.
"This thing all pops up, and I thought it was interesting the very first day he gets the job," Ryan said at the Scouting Combine. "When I called Darrelle, I go, 'C'mon, the man hasn't been on the job 24 hours and now you're going to get traded?' I told him, plain and simple, you're not going to get traded. ... There's no validity to that trade."
Idzik tore his ACL in the third quarter of an overtime win in Miami in September. Because of the serious salary cap issues the Jets are facing, dealing Revis for a collection of draft choices might be viewed by Idzik as the quickest way to rebuild a contending roster.
