It didn’t take long for Fresno State to find a coach. And the coach is Fresno State alum Jeff Tedford.

The Fresno Bee first reported the former Cal coach had reached an agreement to be Fresno’s new head coach Wednesday night. Fresno made it official Thursday.

The school fired coach Tim DeRuyter in October after a 1-7 start. When the team parted with DeRuyter, Tedford was immediately mentioned as the team’s future hire.

The Bee reported a Friday press conference is being set up to make the Tedford hire official.

Tedford, 55, has spent the season as an analyst for No. 4 Washington. Huskies QB Jake Browning has thrown for 34 touchdowns and three interceptions while completing two-thirds of his passes. Tedford coached Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers while at Cal and also former NFL first round pick Kyle Boller.

Quarterback stability has been an issue for the Bulldogs since the departure of now Oakland Raiders QB Derek Carr. The Bulldogs are being outscored approximately 34-19 in 2016.

Tedford coached at Cal from 2002-2012. He had an 82-57 record with the Bears and was 50-45 in conference play. His teams won 10 games in 2004 and 2006 but was fired after a 3-9 season in 2012 followed up a 7-6 campaign.

Tedford was originally hired to be the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before the 2014 season but took a leave of absence because of heart surgery and parted ways with the team in December of that year. He was the coach of the BC Lions in the CFL in 2015.
