Report: Arlington, New Orleans favorites to host Champions Bowl

Only three cities remain in the running to host the new Champions Bowl, according to ESPN.com, and Arlington, Texas, and New Orleans have emerged as the favorites.

The Champions Bowl will debut on Jan. 1, 2015, and will feature the champion of the Big 12 against the Southeastern Conference champion if neither is selected for a national championship semifinal game. In the conferecne champ is chosen for a semifinal game, another team from that conference will be sent to the Champions Bowl.

ESPN reported last week that the 10 cities that received a request for a proposal to bid on the Champions Bowl were Arlington, New Orleans, Atlanta, Phoenix, Houston, Orlando, Nashville, San Antonio, Tampa, Fla., and Jacksonville.

However, only Arlington, New Orleans and Atlanta have decided to bid on the bowl, ESPN.com reported, relying on sources. Phoenix and Tampa will not submit a bid. Houston, Orlando, Nashville, San Antonio and Jacksonville have not made a decision yet, but a source told ESPN.com they are unlikely to bid because of the belief that New Orleans and Arlington are the only sites that will be considered.
