Red Sox send Ortiz back to DL, season in doubt

The Red Sox activated Daisuke Matsuzaka from the disabled list and started him Monday against the Royals.

The Red Sox also placed designated hitter David Ortiz on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to August 25) due to a right Achilles strain, recalled outfielder Ryan Kalish from Triple-A Pawtucket and optioned right-handed pitcher Pedro Beato to Pawtucket.

Matsuzaka and Kalish were activated in time for Monday's four-game series finale at Fenway Park, with Matsuzaka slated as the starting pitcher for the first time since he was pulled after one inning July 2 at Oakland.

Ortiz, 36, was 2 for 4 with a double in the series opener on Friday. That was his first game action since injuring his heel on July 16 against the White Sox. Ortiz was scheduled to discuss his recovery options with team physicians and officials later Monday. He was batting .318 with 23 home runs and 60 RBIs in 90 games.
