Red Sox release Prior from minor league team

The Boston Red Sox released right-hander Mark Prior, who is attempting a comeback to the major leagues, ESPN Boston reported Friday.

Prior was pitching for the Red Sox's Class AAA affiliate in Pawtucket.

Prior, 31, appeared in 19 games for Pawtucket. He went 1-0 with a 3.96 ERA but he walked 23 batters in 25 innings with 38 strikeouts.

Prior was headed toward a great career with the Chicago Cubs a decade ago until injuries slowed him down.

The Red Sox made the move to make room on their roster for right-hander Pedro Beato, who was acquired from the New York Mets earlier in the week for Kelly Shoppach.
