Press Box: Duke No. 1 in basketball polls
Indiana's weekend loss was Duke's gain in the college basketball polls.
The Blue Devils moved up one spot to No. 1 in both the Associated Press and USA Today men's basketball Top 25 on Monday after Indiana lost in overtime to in-state rival Butler 88-86 on Saturday in Indianapolis.
Duke (9-0) received 62 of 65 first-place votes in the AP media poll, and 30 of 31 first-place votes in the USA Today coaches poll. The Blue Devils were idle last week.
The last time Duke topped the AP poll was during the 2010-11 season. Overall, the Blue Devils have held the No. 1 spot for 123 weeks, 11 behind UCLA for the most in history.
Michigan (11-0) moved up to second in both polls, and was followed by Syracuse. Arizona is No. 4 in the AP poll, while Louisville holds that spot in the USA Today poll.
Butler is No. 19 in this week's AP poll, and No. 25 in the coaches poll.
TENNIS
--The U.S. Open's decision to move the men's championship match to Monday next year in place of the traditional Sunday final has drawn sharp opposition from the players.
In a statement issued Monday, the ATP rebuked the plan, saying the players made it clear to the United States Tennis Association that they're not in favor.
"We strongly believe the U.S. Open should keep a similar schedule to the other Grand Slams, with the men's semifinals completed by Friday and the final on Sunday," the ATP said in the statement. "It is unfortunate the U.S. Open response did not reflect our views on this issue and the ATP and its players will continue to pursue this matter in its discussions with the USTA."
GOLF
--Oakley has filed a breach of contract lawsuit against Rory McIlroy and Nike, according to a report.
Oakley, an apparel and sunglasses manufacturer who had sponsored of the world's top-ranked golfer, claimed in a suit filed Dec. 10 in federal court in Santa Ana, Calif., that it had a "right of first refusal" in its contract with McIlroy. It also argued that he and his agent, Conor Ridge, ignored a counteroffer to match Nike's bid, ESPN.com reported.
Oakley had signed McIlroy through Dec. 31. The deal with Nike is reported to be $200 million.
