NFL commissioner Roger Goodell usually holds his State of the League news conference on Friday of Super Bowl week, but this year he held it on Wednesday. One of the first questions he received was about former President George H. W. Bush, a Houston resident.

Goodell acknowledged that he had spoken with Bush about being part of the Super Bowl LI pre-game ceremonies, and he, and former First Lady Barbara Bush, have accepted.

The Bushes were each hospitalized in recent weeks; Barbara was released last week, but President Bush was not released until Monday. The 92-year-old was at Houston Methodist Hospital for two weeks due to a bout with pneumonia.

They are apparently feeling well enough to be part of the festivities, and will do the coin flip just before the New England Patriots and Atlanta Falcons kickoff.
