Charles Tillman, also known as “Peanut” Tillman, has been a great cornerback over the course of his career. With his experience and abilities, he would be a wonderful addition to any NFL team, especially ones with upcoming young corners who are trying to get a feel for the professional game.

This is why some are left scratching their heads, wondering why the Carolina Panthers have yet to re-sign the 35-year-old veteran.

The Panthers have made it clear time and time again that they are comfortable with their new young cornerbacks. After losing Josh Norman in free agency, the team drafted James Bradberry, Daryl Williams and Zack Sanchez. The team also has Bené Benwikere, who has been solid for the team since being drafted in 2014, and journeyman Robert McClain, who rejoined the team towards the end of last season after both Tillman and Benwikere suffered injuries that ended their respective seasons.

However, reports last week told a different story. Head coach Ron Rivera was quite unhappy with the performance of his young players during minicamp, and was not shy about sharing his feelings to his players or the media.

The Panthers are a great young team. However, with the loss of Norman and Tillman, it would be up to Benwikere and safety Kurt Coleman to lead one of the youngest position groups in the NFL. Meanwhile, Tillman has made it clear he only wants to play for one team: the Carolina Panthers.

Rivera and Tillman have a strong bond that dates all the way back to 2004, when the two were both members of the Chicago Bears. Rivera was only a defensive coordinator, but formed a great relationship with Tillman. Perhaps, although Rivera is aware that Tillman desperately wants to return, he wishes to hold off on bringing him back unless he feels it is absolutely necessary.

What Rivera must understand is this: without a leader like Tillman, his young cornerbacks may not stand a chance against the league’s receivers. In this division, in the NFC South, the Panthers must face wide receivers Mike Evans, Julio Jones and the great quarterback Drew Brees a total of six times a year. That has to be intimidating to new NFL players. Having an experienced corner that has played successfully against some of the best quarterbacks and receivers would be a tremendous boost to this team.

If the Panthers want to continue to build on their success, they should seriously consider giving Charles Tillman the call. He would be more than happy to come back and help lead this team back to the playoffs.
