Pacers' Ian Mahinmi: shoulder injury 'not as bad as everybody thought'

Indiana Pacers backup center Ian Mahinmi hurt his shoulder while practicing with the French national team before the start of the FIBA World Cup, and the initial prognosis called for him to miss two to three months. After returning to Indianapolis and meeting with the team's medical staff, though, the injury doesn't look as serious. From Vigilant Sports' Scott Agness:

“No surgery, no injections,” Mahinmi told VigilantSports.com Thursday. “So it’s not as bad as everybody thought it would be.

“Obviously there’s a healing process and then treatment, and then I have to get strength back in my shoulder. Then, I’m good to go.”

While Mahinmi did not provide a timetable, he hopes it will only keep him away from basketball activities for a few weeks.

Mahinmi said he has already started treatment. Though he can’t do any on-court work, he can lift light weights, as he did Thursday.

Mahinmi added that it was "very disappointing" to miss the World Cup, but he's "not going to sit over here and cry." His shorter timetable is a bit of good news for the Pacers, an organization that is reeling after losing star Paul George for the season.

In 12.7 minutes per game last season, Mahinmi averaged 3.5 points, 3.3 rebounds and 0.9 blocks per game, shooting 48 percent from the field.
