Orioles pick up outfielder Pearce for second time

The Baltimore Orioles claimed outfielder Steve Pearce off waivers after the New York Yankees designated him for assignment, MLB.com reported Saturday.

Pearce, 29, is not eligible for the postseason if the Orioles make it, but he adds depth the last few games of the regular season. Outfielder Lew Ford is out with a groin injury.

The Orioles actually acquired Pearce from the Yankees for cash in June, then the Houston Astros claimed him off waivers at the end of July. The Yankees picked up Pearce a second time earlier this week when then the Astros let him go.

Pearce is batting .239 with four home runs and 26 RBI in 159 at-bats this year.

The Orioles recalled right-hander Oliver Drake and placed him on the 60-day disabled list with shoulder tendinitis to make room for Pearce.
