Oakland's latest walk-off win overshadows club-record 21 whiffs
The Oakland A's won Monday night -- well, really Tuesday morning, after midnight -- but struck out a franchise-record 21 times during the 4-3, 15-inning victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
The day before in Baltimore, the A's racked up 14 strikeouts, so the whiffs are coming fast and furious, with some pretty notable numbers getting put up.
On Monday, Josh Reddick and Brandon Inge both struck out four times, Kurt Suzuki three times. Reddick and Inge both struck out twice on Sunday, too.
While Reddick went 0-for-7 Monday to dip his average to .265, Inge singled to open the 15th inning and scored the winning run on Jemile Weeks' sacrifice fly.
The series opener against Tampa Bay lasted 5:09, the longest game at the Coliseum since July 3, 1983, when a contest against Texas went 5:19.
Weeks' sacrifice fly gave him his first-ever game-ending RBI, but walk-offs are just regular occurrences in Oakland. The team has 12 walk-off wins, including each of the past two home games, three of the past four and nine of the past 17.
The A's are the first team with walk-offs in nine of 17 home games since the 1974 Los Angeles Dodgers.
