Jake Arrieta loses no-hitter with one out in eighth
Cubs starting pitcher Jake Arrieta has flirted with a no-hitter several times this season, and he did it again Tuesday. This time around, he threw up zeroes in the hit column against the Reds through seven innings.
Only a walk to Billy Hamilton had separated Arrieta from perfection to that point. And then, with one out in the eighth inning, Brandon Phillps doubled to the left-center gap. Cubs center fielder Matt Szczur made an incredible diving effort, but the ball was just too far out of his reach.
Arrieta, 28, is having himself a breakout season. He came into Tuesday 8-5 with a 2.82 ERA (136 ERA+), 1.07 WHIP and 144 strikeouts against only 39 walks in 140 2/3 innings.
On this night, he'd go on to post one of the more dominant outings in the majors this season. He'd end up throwing a complete-game, one-hit shutout, striking out 13. He's lowered his ERA to 2.65 in the process.
The Cubs have 13 no-hitters in franchise history, with the most recent one being Carlos Zambrano's neutral site gem in 2008.
Three individual pitchers have thrown no-hitters this season: Josh Beckett, Clayton Kershaw and Tim Lincecum. The Phillies also completed a committee no-no on Sept. 1, when four pitches teamed up to no-hit the Braves.
