MLB roundup: Brandon Webb to retire
Former National League Cy Young Award winner Brandon Webb is retiring from baseball.
Webb's agents at Millennium Sports -- Jonathan Maurer and Mike Montana -- made the announcement through a press release on Monday.
The 33-year-old has not pitched in the major leagues since 2009 because of shoulder injuries. He was attempting to come back this year.
"With retirement, Brandon looks forward to focusing on more time with his family," the statement read. "He would like to thank all the countless coaches, players and friends for their support during his career."
Webb won the NL Cy Young Award in 2006 and had a five-year run as a dominant pitcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
He was a three-time All-Star who averaged 227 innings from 2004-08. He went 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA in 2006. He followed that by going 40-17 over the next two seasons and placed second in the Cy Young balloting both years.
--The Oakland A's acquired infielder Jed Lowrie from the Houston Astros as part of a five-player trade.
Lowrie and right-hander Fernando Rodriguez will go from Houston to Oakland, while first baseman Chris Carter, right-hander Brad Peacock and catching prospect Max Stassi are headed for Houston.
Lowrie, 28, hit .244 with 16 home runs last season, but he played in just 97 games because of ankle and knee problems.
---Pitcher Max Scherzer agreed to a one-year, $6.725 million contract with the Detroit Tigers, avoiding arbitration.
Scherzer, 28, went 16-7 with a 3.74 ERA last season.
---New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter is not running yet but has been fielding ground balls and taking batting practice as he recovers from surgery to repair a broken left ankle.
"Everything's been good, everything's right where it needs to be," Jeter said in the New York Daily News. "The goal is April 1, that's when we start our season. I'm progressing, right where I need to be."
---The Cleveland Indians signed outfielder Jeremy Hermida to a minor league contract, ESPN.com reported.
Hermida, 29, had just 24 at-bats for the San Diego Padres. He has played mostly in Class AAA the past two seasons.
---The San Francisco Giants claimed Tony Abreu off waivers from Kansas City.
Abreu spent most of last season at Triple-A, but hit .252 in 22 games for the Royals.
