Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan was ejected near the end of his team’s 4-1 loss to the Ottawa Senators on Thursday.

As the play headed up ice, referee Wes McCauley signaled to the Penguins bench indicating Sullivan had been thrown out of the game. Shortly before Sullivan was thrown out, defenseman Justin Schultz was called for goaltender interference

“I was probably a little bit surprised, but it is what it is,” Sullivan said after the game. “That’s between the refs and the coaches, and that’s where it will stay.”

Pittsburgh’s loss to Ottawa was the first time the team had been defeated in back-to-back games in regulation since Dec. 18 and 19 of 2015. Overall the Penguins went 90 games without back-to-back regulation losses before these defeats.

The Penguins lost to the Washington Capitals on Wednesday and have been outscored 9-3 over their last two games.
