Mike Napoli shows off jumping ability while running the bases

Nimble is likely not the first word you associate with Mike Napoli. But don’t underestimate the big, burly Cleveland Indians first baseman, as showed he can absolutely bust a move when it’s necessary.

We were treated to Napoli’s finest footwork Wednesday night when a little hop and step was the difference between being tagged out at second or keeping the pressure on.

With Napoli at first base and the bases loaded, Carlos Santana ripped a ball to right field that forced Napoli to get moving if he was going to get into second safely. Minnesota Twins outfielder Max Kepler fielded the ball and made a nice throw to set up a close play at the base.

Napoli wasn’t going to take this one sitting down or sliding, though. He leapt in the air with one outstretched leg to reach the bag and avoid the tag. The hard part done, he would come around to score as part of a five-run inning in an 8-4 win for the Indians over the Twins. Not too bad for a player known more for his ability to mash balls out of the park than he is for running the bases.

It’s been quite the year for Napoli in Cleveland. From being the inspiration for the Party at Napoli’s fun – which continues to grow into greater things, including a real party – to a resurgence in his production at the plate, it’s no wonder he’s jumping like the music is turned all the way up.
