McQueary: Paterno told him he would be scapegoated
Former Penn State assistant football coach Mike McQueary presented testimony Monday in which he said late coach Joe Paterno warned him about being scapegoated by Penn State administrators, the Harrisburg Patriot-News reported.
McQueary was on the stand in a preliminary hearing for former Penn State President Graham Spanier, former university vice president Gary Schultz and former Athletic Director Tim Curley. They are accused of a cover-up in the Jerry Sandusky child-abuse scandal.
McQueary provided new details of his conversations with Paterno as the Sandusky case was coming to light.
"Old Main screwed it up," McQueary testified Paterno told him. Old Main is the name given to Penn State's administration.
Just hours before university trustees fired Paterno, McQueary said Paterno approached him on the practice field.
"He said, 'The university is going to come down hard on you,'" McQueary trestified, according to report. "'Don't worry about me (Paterno). They're going to try to scapegoat you. Trust your lawyers. Don't trust (university general counsel) Cynthia Baldwin. Don't trust Old Main.' I'm sorry, but that's what he said."
