Mayhew says door 'shut' for WR Young in Detroit

INDIANAPOLIS - Martin Mayhew hopes Titus Young will be able to resume his NFL career, but the Detroit Lions' general manager said the door is "shut" when it comes to the Motor City.

Young was waived by the Lions on Feb. 4 following a turbulent 2012 season in which he punched teammate Louis Delmas during offseason workouts, purposely lined up in the wrong position during a game and had a verbal altercation with wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson. The St. Louis Rams were the only team to put in a waiver claim, but released him 10 days later.

"It's a unique situation with Titus," Mayhew said. "It's unfortunate, but I feel like I want to help him with his problems, whatever they are."

Mayhew said he has been in contact with Young's family since the receiver's release from the Rams, but declined to get into specifics about what issues Young may be dealing with.
