The rosters for the Centennial Classic alumni game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings have been set for their New Years Eve contest at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto.

They include several Hockey Hall of Famers and former All-Stars from both teams, but the most intriguing storyline involves Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan will take part in the game for the Detroit Red Wings. Shanahan played a majority of his career with the Red Wings, where he won three Stanley Cups and scored 309 goals (almost half of his career total of 656) in 716 games. Shanahan was named the president of the Maple Leafs in 2014.

The Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues are playing their Winter Classic alumni game on the same day at Busch Stadium, and some big-named players who played important roles for those squads will be in Toronto instead.

Chelios, who spent a majority of his career with the Blackhawks, will suit up for the Red Wings. Joseph, who spent most of his time with the Blues, will play for the Maple Leafs. Shanahan played 277 games for the Blues in his career and had his best individual seasons in St. Louis, but most of his team success came with Detroit. Thomas played 334 games with Chicago and 377 with the Maple Leafs. He also played 44 games with the Red Wings.

Before the 2014 Winter Classic, the Maple Leafs and Red Wings played in consecutive alumni games in what was called the “Alumni Showdown.”

Detroit great and current Tampa Bay Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman played in the second game, but is not currently listed on the team’s roster for this alumni game. He also took part in the Detroit, Colorado Avalanche alumni game last season.

The Centennial Classic will be played Jan. 1 at Exhibition Stadium.
