Lat ailment keeps Royals' Dyson on bench
Jarrod Dyson has not started since Aug. 29, and it appears iffy he will start again this season.
The Kansas City Royals outfielder has a strained right lat that restricts him from throwing. He can still be used as a pinch runner or pinch hitter.
"Hopefully before the end of the season, I'll be back to throwing," Dyson said Thursday before the Royals lost 5-4 to the Texas Rangers in 10 innings. "For the most part, I don't think it's nothing serious. I'll be ready, if not for the rest of this year, for the beginning of 2013."
It is bad timing for Dyson to be out. He was starting most games in late August, and September is a good time to make an impression for next season.
"Exactly," Dyson said. "I'm kind of frustrated about that, but I've got to stay positive and overcome this little bump in the road. It's just frustrating because it seems like I get a chance to play every day (and) something happens.
"If I could play, I'd roll myself out there, but I can't, unfortunately. There's nothing I can do about it. Unfortunately, I can't play, and I love to play.
"I haven't started throwing. I don't want to aggravate it. We're holding off on throwing. ... Just give it time to rest."
Dyson was used as a pinch runner Wednesday night and scored from first on Alcides Escobar's single.
"I can still do that," Dyson said.
