Kingsbury named Texas Tech head coach

Texas A&M offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury has been named Texas Tech's new head coach, Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt announced on Twitter.

Kingsbury, 33, was a record-setting quarterback for the Red Raiders a decade ago.

He replaces Tommy Tuberville, who left Texas Tech to become the head coach at Cincinnati.

Kingsbury has had a rapid rise to his first head-coaching position. Five years ago he was the quality control assistant at the University of Houston under Kevin Sumlin.

Two years later, Kingsbury became the offensive coordinator at Houston, and this year he was the offensive coordinator at Texas A&M under Sumlin.

The Aggies finished No. 3 in the nation in scoring and total offense, and they produced the Heisman Trophy winner in Johnny Manziel.

Chris Thomsen, who led the Red Raiders offensive line under Tuberville, will coach Texas Tech in its bowl game.
