Sports and politics can be a dangerous mix. Sure, there are some politicians who are actually sports fans, and have a history of following the game. But there are others who will claim a team in order to pander for votes. If you try the latter and don’t know your stuff, you’ll be ripped apart by sports fans.

Republican delegates from the state of Kansas tried a similar strategy at the Republican National Convention on Tuesday, and we’ll let you be the judge on whether or not they deserve scorn.

The delegates showed up to cast their votes decked out in Kansas City Royals gear. Typically, during this portion of the convention, the speaker says a few words about their state before eventually announcing how many votes go to each candidate.

Problem is … uh … the Royals don’t actually play in Kansas. They play in neighboring Missouri. And while the states are close in proximity, it’s not exactly the same thing. Delegates from Idaho probably aren’t going to claim Seattle Mariners great Ken Griffey Jr. as part of their state’s sports history.

In fairness, the speaker from technically said Kansas was “the home of the greatest fans” of the Royals.

Does that lessen the blow or make it acceptable? You can be the judge.

While the Missouri delegates did not show up clad in Royals gear, the speaker for Missouri made sure to let Kansas know that the Royals play in their state.

So, there you have it. The biggest sports feud of 2016 may have ended before it even started … at least until the St. Louis Cardinals get involved. Hey, they play in Missouri too and demand respect! What’s it going to take for fans to finally support and give them the recognition they deserve?
