June Starter Rankings

Matthew Pouliot breaks down the June starting pitcher rankings

Here are the June Rankings. Players are ranked for the remainder of the season based on how I believe they’ll perform in 5x5 leagues. Players are also listed at the positions where they’re most valuable, so if you don’t see that third baseman you’re looking for, he’s probably listed at second or short.

Dropping off: Jose Fernandez (No. 7), Martin Perez (No. 74), Robbie Ross (No. 85), Hector Santiago (No. 123), Matt Harrison (No. 131), Jeremy Guthrie (No. 133), Vidal Nuno (No. 137), Chris Capuano (No. 140), Brett Anderson (No. 141), Jeremy Guthrie (No. 144), Jacob Turner (No. 147), Kyle Kendrick (No. 150)

  • This would be a grand time to make a play for Zimmermann in fantasy leagues. His stuff isn’t only as good as ever, but it might actually be better; he has far and away the highest swing-and-miss rate of his career and his strikeout rate is at its highest since 2010. While his ERA stands at 4.07, his FIP and xFIP are both better than usual. He’s just giving up a whole bunch more singles than one would expect, and that’s not something that figures to last.

  • Stroman is going to get a chance to stick around after shutting down the Royals on Saturday. I’m not sure he’s a great bet for the short term -- not only was he ineffective as a reliever for the Jays last month, but he gave up seven runs over nine innings in his two starts in Triple-A after returning to the minors -- but the stuff is there to make him a No. 2 or No. 3 starter for the Jays. He’s worth the flier in mixed leagues.

  • Rubby De La Rosa couldn’t be left off after his impressive showing against the Rays on Saturday, though it’s really unclear what is going to happen with the Red Sox rotation going forward. After all, Buchholz and Doubront are barely hurt and both have track records that deserve additional opportunities. At the same time, De La Rosa, Workman and Allen Webster are all real talents and seem like better options than Buchholz and Doubront right now. The upside is there to make De La Rosa worth a grab in mixed leagues, though not at the cost of a quality player. He’s No. 119 here right now. Next month, I imagine he’ll be in the top 80 or he’ll be back in the minors.

  • The reports on Johan Santana as he returns from another shoulder surgery have been awfully encouraging, but I think he’s a big long shot to amass fantasy value while pitching in the AL East and Camden Yards. If he had signed with an NL team over the winter, he might have cracked the top 150 this month. If all goes well, he’ll join Baltimore’s rotation in 3-4 weeks.
