Joey Votto almost forgot how to turn a double play

Most of the time Joey Votto makes playing baseball look easy. The Cincinnati Reds star has perhaps the best batting eye in the league and what he does on the field often appears effortless.

That was not the case Monday afternoon, though. Not only did Votto not take the simple and straightforward route, he made the game a bit harder for himself.

With a runner at first base and one out in the second inning against the New York Mets, Jay Bruce ripped a liner right at Votto. Votto snared the ball with his glove and immediately began chasing Wilmer Flores toward second base, who had been taking a standard lead at first.

Of course, all Votto had to do was touch first base to retire Flores and pull off the unassisted double play, but he was nearly halfway to second before he realized it. So Votto hustled back to the bag, stepped on it to end the inning and and walked back to the dugout laughing to himself about all the extra, unnecessary work he’d just done.

When it’s one of the rare occasions where you don’t make baseball look way too easy, all you can really do is laugh.
