Idzik, Ryan say Revis trade not in Jets' plans
INDIANAPOLIS -- Since his first day on the job, New York Jets general manager John Idzik admits he has been regularly and unexpectedly sidetracked by simmering storylines involving two-time holdout cornerback Darrelle Revis.
"I had just walked into the building and kind of joked I was trying to find my office," Idzik said. "We didn't even have a chance to get to know each other as a staff. It's been a rather dominant topic. Hopefully everybody knows by know how much we value Darrelle."
Revis remains a hot topic in New York. He told NFL Network earlier this week he's still looking for answers from the Jets specific to his future. Revis, coming off of a torn anterior cruciate ligament, is entering the final year of a four-year deal. He said he's frustrated by circulating trade rumors, but Idzik said there's no fire beneath the billowing smoke this time.
"The magnitude of a story that quite honestly, I didn't think was that big. From my standpoint and from Rex (Ryan's) standpoint," Idzik said.
He repeated multiple times Thursday that a trade wasn't in the team's plan. Ryan said he did provide Revis the only answer he has on the topic - that there would be no trade.
"This thing all pops up, and I thought it was interesting the very first day he gets the job," Ryan said of Idzik. "When I called Darrelle, I go, 'C'mon, the man hasn't been on the job 24 hours and now you're going to get traded?' I told him, plain and simple, you're not going to get traded. ... There's no validity to that trade."
Ryan echoed Idzik's statements that Revis' talent is visible to even the untrained eye.
"Trust me, it was a big difference," Ryan said of playing without Revis. "We see it, everybody sees it. The young corner from Seattle sees it ... He's comparing himself to the best."
Ryan was referring to Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, who engaged Revis in some trash talking over Twitter on Wednesday that made national headlines.
Revis has a $9 million salary cap figure for 2013 as part of a four-year, $46 million deal he signed after a 35-day holdout in 210.
He cannot be franchised after the 2013 season. If he holds out, the contract triggers for another three seasons (through 2016).
