Hurricanes lose Pitkanen to heel injury

Carolina defenseman Joni Pitkanen will miss the remainder of the regular season with a heal injury, the team announced Wednesday.

Pitkanen sustained a broken bone in his left heel during the second period of the Hurricanes' loss to the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night. The recovery time is expected to be 10 to 12 weeks.

News of the injury came one day after the Hurricanes acquired defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron from the Tampa Bay Lightnight in a trade for Adam Hall and a 2013 seventh-round draft pick.

Injuries have limited Pitkanen's ice time this season. He missed 13 games in February and March because of a lower-body injury.

In 22 games this year, Pitkanen has one goal and eight assists while playing an average of 22 minutes, 49 seconds.

The 29-year-old Pitkanen has 57 goals, 225 assists and 484 penalty minutes during his career with Philadelphia, Edmonton and Calgary.
