Miami Heat forward LeBron James added another accomplishment to his long list on Thursday when he was named the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year for 2013.

James, who led the Heat to their second consecutive NBA championship in June and was selected for his fourth league MVP award, received 31 of 96 votes in the AP balloting. Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning finished second with 20 votes and NASCAR Sprint Cup Jimmy Johnson was third with seven.

The 28-year-old James is the third basketball player to win the award, following Michael Jordan and Larry Bird. Others winners of an honor that has been presented since 1931 include Jesse Owens, Joe Louis, Muhammad Ali and Tiger Woods.

American tennis star Serena Williams was named the AP's Female Athlete of the Year on Wednesday.
