Hanley Ramirez jams wrist after taking a trip down dugout stairs
Tuesday night was a bad one for the Boston Red Sox. They blew a four-run lead against the Seattle Mariners in the eighth inning, and then Hanley Ramirez had an accident (or did he take a “trip?”) on a set of stairs as he was walking to the visitors clubhouse at Safeco Field.
Hanley fell down some steps going into the clubhouse. Jammed his left wrist. Getting X-rays.

Red Sox manager John Farrell spoke to NESN and shed a little more light on what happened.
“After the game, he was walking down the dugout — there’s two or three steps at the bottom of the dugout coming into the clubhouse — and lost his footing,” Farrell said. “He caught himself behind and jammed his left wrist. So, precautionary, just going to see what’s going on there.”
Ouch. Pete Abraham, who covers the Red Sox for the Boston Globe, helpfully tweeted a picture of the stairs so we could see exactly what Hanley tripped over.

Cleats are great for playing baseball, but not so great for walking pretty much anywhere else. It’s easy to see how Hanley, or anyone wearing cleats, could have tripped. The Red Sox had no updates on Ramirez’s wrist or the result of the X-rays, and wouldn’t until Wednesday.

No, it really doesn’t sound good at all. If it was nothing, they might have cleared it up right away. But with Dave Dombrowski, president of baseball operations making the update, it doesn’t seem like nothing.
If there is something wrong, that’s a huge blow to Hanley’s season. He’s having a decent one after a less-than-great 2015 campaign with the Red Sox. In 98 games in 2016, Hanley has hit .278/.354/.451, and he hit his 14th home run of the season in the fourth inning of Tuesday night’s game.
Hopefully it is nothing, and Hanley can keep his resurgence going. But no matter what, I have a message for all ballplayers: be careful walking in cleats!
