Gustavsson joins Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings signed goaltender Jonas Gustavsson to a two-year, $3 million contract Sunday and likely will make him the backup to starter Jimmy Howard.

Gustavsson posted a 39-45-15 record with a 2.98 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage in three seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Sweden native's negotiating rights were traded last week to the Winnipeg Jets for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2013 draft, but the team was unable to reach a deal with Gustavsson.

Injuries limited Howard to 57 starts last season. His backups were Ty Conklin and Joe MacDonald.
