Griffins 3, Wolves 2 (OT)
Center Landon Ferraro scored 18 seconds into overtime to give the Grand Rapids Griffins a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Wolves on Wednesday night at Van Andel Arena.
Ferraro, who got assists from Jan Mursak and Brett Skinner, beat Wolves goaltender Matt Climie as Chicago fell to 29-19-5-4.
The Wolves suffered their sixth loss to the Griffins (36-19-2-2) this season. They were 0-2-3-1 against Grand Rapids this season.
The Wolves welcomed back forward Jordan Schroeder, who played his first game with Chicago since Jan. 5 after being sent down by the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Andrew Ebbett. Schroeder scored the game's first goal, redirecting a point shot by defenseman Derek Joslin past Griffins goaltender Petr Mrazek's stick side at 11:24 of the first period.
Chicago, which outshot Grand Rapids 23-19 in the first two periods combined, gave up a goal to left wing Tomas Tatar with 29 seconds left in the second period. Just 18 seconds later, Ferraro followed suit, knocking the puck past Climie and giving the Griffins a 2-1 lead.
With 6:33 left in the game, Chicago forward Darren Haydar put the Griffins on the power play. He was charged with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, plus a 10 minute misconduct and game misconduct.
They managed to kill the penalty and then got a power play of their own. Top Canucks prospect Nicklas Jensen then scored his first goal with the Wolves by beating Mrazek top shelf with 3:56 left in regulation, setting up overtime.
