Former All-Star Scott dies
The Washington County, Miss., coroner announced Monday that former major leaguer George Scott died. He was 71.
No cause of death was reported.
Scott played 14 major league seasons. He played for the American League champion-Boston Red Sox in 1967 and led the A.L. in home runs (36), RBI (109) and total bases (318) with the Milwaukee Brewers in 1975.
He finished his career in 1979 with 271 homers. He is credited with coining the term "taters" for home runs. He won eight gold gloves at first base. Scott also became the second rookie first baseman ever to start the All-Star Game.
After his major league career was over, Scott played and managed in Mexico.
He was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006.
