While there are some young pieces to be excited about for the Philadelphia Eagles, the core of the roster remains unproven as we turn the page into 2017. At least a year or two out of consistently challenging for a playoff spot, the Philadelphia Eagles are not seen by many as a true contender for 2017. Included in that list are the writers at ESPN.

Releasing their Way too early 2017 Power Rankings following the New England Patriots Super Bowl victory over the Atlanta Falcons, the Philadelphia Eagles find themselves placed near the bottom of the organizations list. While this could still change based on draft picks and free agent signings, the fact that the Eagles currently sit so low could serve as an omen for the coming season.

Ranking Philly as the 23rd placed team in his power rankings, writer Kevin Seifert did state that most of the organization and league has “high optimism” for quarterback Carson Wentz. However, Seifert did point out some of the quarterback issues from last season.

“His rookie season demonstrated the large learning curve he brought with him to the NFL. He finished the season ranked 26th in QBR (52.8) but displayed all the tools necessary to develop into a much better player.”

Also pointing towards the poor play of the offensive players that surrounded Wentz, Seifert said that “It’s fair to question whether the Eagles have surrounded him with enough of an offense. Without many playmakers and with a receiving corps that had the NFL’s sixth-highest drop percentage, the Eagles averaged just 5 yards per play in 2016.”

That said, Seifert did point out their is a clear way forward for the Philadelphia Eagles.

“The Eagles are poised to make a jump if Wentz continues his development and the Eagles collect more explosive players. Even after surrendering four draft picks to acquire Wentz last season, they have the No. 14 or No. 15 overall pick after trading Bradford to the Vikings. This team’s priorities should be clear.”

Improving the wide receiver position has always been on the agenda for this offseason. While doing just that won’t fix all of the team’s issues from 2016, adding some talent and depth to the position will go a long way in giving this team a shot at the playoffs next season.
