Eli Manning Shining In Giants Training Camp

Eli Manning threw an interception on his first attempt of training camp. In the ten days and eight practices since, No. 10 has not thrown a single pick, lighting up the defense like a man possessed,

In years past, Manning would routinely turn the ball over in practice. Since Ben McAdoo’s arrival as arrival as offensive coordinator in 2014, Manning’s efficiency is light-years ahead of where it used to be. He has cut down on his turnovers and while improving his yardage and touchdowns.

Now, entering his third year in McAdoo’s offense, Manning is in complete control and poised to have a brilliant season at the ripe old age of 35.

“I feel like I’m having a good camp,” Manning said. “I feel like I’m playing fast, seeing things well, and throwing the ball accurately. So we have to keep that going.”

Manning is coming off a 2015 campaign where he had career highs in completions (387), touchdowns (35), and quarterback rating (93.6).

The Giants’ offense (in spite of injuries to Victor Cruz and Larry Donnell, a running game that was right around the middle of the pack, and a patchwork offensive line) ranked eighth in yards per game (372.0) and sixth in points (420) and points per game (26.2).

Getting Cruz and Donnell back in the fold healthy are key to Manning’s success and a Giants return to the postseason for the first time since winning Super Bowl XLVI.

Manning’s own legacy as a player is on the line as well. He is entering his 13th NFL season and despite the two Super Bowls, two Super Bowl MVPs, and despite being the Giants’ all-time leader in passing yards, completions, and touchdowns, his success is often looked at as luck more so than skill.

A deep playoff run in 2016 will silence some of the critics. A third Lombardi Trophy will shut the critics up forever.

His former offensive coordinator, now head coach, likes what he has seen from Manning so far in training camp.

“Eli’s been sharp,” McAdoo said. “He’s worked at it in the offseason, had some good looks and good looks in the offseason training program. He’s been sharp so far. First pass, he got that out the way quick, the turnover, but he’s been sharp since then.”
