The Philadelphia Eagles already had a cloudy picture at running back, going into the 2016 season. It’s starting to look a little murkier. Running back Darren Sproles has been a no-show, during the team’s offseason activities.

The reason why Sproles has been absent, is due in large part to trade speculation. Teams inquired on Sproles trade availability, during the 2016 NFL draft. The Eagles didn’t move him and head coach Doug Pederson, proclaims he wants Sproles on the team. The Eagles are poised to compete for the weak NFC east division, so having Sproles on the roster will help that.

Would it be a good idea to trade him?

Along with NFL network’s insider Ian Rapoport, CBS Sports Benjamin Allbright voiced trade interest in Sporles. He took to local Philadlephia radio station, 94 WIP, announcing teams called the Eagles during the 2016 draft. He pointed out those teams were the Miami Dolphins and the San Franciso 49ers (Chip Kelly of course).

Sproles will be turning 33 in July. He reportedly is asking for a contract extension (according to Jason Cole of bleacher report). He shot down those rumors on his Twitter account.

Age hasn’t slowed down the running back at all, especially since his skill set isn’t specifically running the ball, but as a receiver. He’s also a valuable special teams asset. But, it might be a good idea for the Eagles to entertain trade offers, for the running back.

He’s entering the last year of his contract with the Eagles. It’s unlikely that they’ll re-sign him in the offseason, or that he will even re-sign here. He wants to compete for a super bowl, he’s coming to the end, of his glorious career. The Eagles could recoup a 2017 draft pick for him, gaining them an asset losing Sproles, rather than getting nothing in return for his services.

Getting a 2017 draft pick for the Eagles, would help the team, as well. They’re without a ’17 first round pick, but acquiring a draft pick for Sproles, would net the Eagles a total of nine picks in 2017. That’s pretty good, especially for a team wanting to build around their young quarterback, Carson Wentz. On the other hand, losing Sproles weakens an already weak team, in terms of playmakers.

Special teams would take a hit, as well. Sproles is by far the best punt returner on the team. Even though, the Eagles have players capable of returning punts (Leodis McKelvin, Kenjon Barner, Byron Marshall, Josh Huff, Chris Givens, etc.), Sproles is much more of an upgrade over them. The Eagles can replace his receiving duties in the backfield.

Wendell Smallwood is a great example of a running back, with talented receiving attributes. Undrafted free agent signing Byron Marshall, has experience at running back, and wide receiver. He’s had both 1,000 yards rushing and receiving, during his Oregon tenure. Kenjon Barner is also decent, in pass catching.

Ultimately, this decision should be given to Darren Sproles. He’s been a true professional his whole NFL career. He’s a decorated veteran, has been a fan favorite in Philadelphia, and in such a short period of time. He deserves a super bowl ring, which he has yet to acquire, during his 11 year career. If his agent finds a team willing to compensate the Eagles, that Sproles views as better chance of winning a Super Bowl with, the Eagles should allow this.

It’s unlikely that they do though. Unless, Sproles really doesn’t want to be here anymore, the Eagles are going to hang onto him most likely. Everyone in the nova care complex believes they can win the NFC east this year. A team vying for a division crown, doesn’t weaken their team. However, it’s a business, and we should all understand if a trade occurs. It works out for both sides, as well. Just hurts the Eagles for this season.

The Eagles acquired Sproles, prior to the 2014 season. They sent the New Orleans Saints, a 2014 5th round pick, in order to acquire him. That’s likely the best the Eagles can get for him in return. He’ll be 33, going into the 2016 season. A fifth, or sixth round pick in the 2017 draft, will likely be the best the Eagles can get. You’re getting a player back, rather than nothing at all, when Sproles walks in the 2017 offseason.
