Dose: Letang sure did play

The Saturday Dose looks at a troika of 3-2 games including a Kris Letang winner

Despite the snowy hype, every game went off on Tuesday night, resuming the 2014-15 season in earnest. There were a lot of them, too, so let’s get right to it.

Don't forget, for everything NHL, check out Rotoworld's up to the minute coverage on Player News, as well as follow@Rotoworld_HK and @cyclelikesedins on Twitter.

ISLANDERS 4, RANGERS 1

-- It looks like the Rangers probably wish this one was postponed ... or maybe they better just hope they can avoid a playoff series against the Islanders. Their local rivals have wiped the floor with them so far.

-- So far, it looks like Mikhail Grabovski (just returning) gets the nod with John Tavares alongside Josh Bailey. Grabovski has seven goals and 15 points in 39 games, but there's enough talent there that he's at least worth watching.

-- How many fantasy owners grimaced (or worse?) when Carl Hagelin spoiled Jaroslav Halak's shutout bid with just 10 seconds remaining? Still a fantastic night of work from Halak, as he stopped 40 out of 41 shots.

-- Johnny Boychuk now has two straight two-assist games, even if it feels weird to refer to any of these streaks since many of them go back a week or so.

PENGUINS 5, JETS 3

-- Kris Letang went from "maybe not playing" to collecting FIVE assists. He's been on a crazy tear aside from that game in which Zac Rinaldo earned himself an eight-game suspension. Even counting that game, Letang has one goal and 11 assists in his six games. He's very close to a point per game with 37 in 41 contests.

-- I almost feel like docking the Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin-less a couple cool points because it came against Ondrej Pavelec. Did something happen to Michael Hutchinson over the break? Did Winnipeg decide that they wanted to force this Pavelec thing with that extra time? Do not get it.

-- The Penguins traded Marcel Goc for Maxim Lapierre, because apparently employing Steve Downie didn't make them detestable enough.

(The big difference is that Downie is worthwhile fantasy-wise, of course. With nine goals, he may just flirt with his 22-goal season with the Lightning back in 2009-10.)

RED WINGS 5, PANTHERS 4

-- This wasn’t one of those games in which the Red Wings merely dragged Petr Mrazek to a win. He stopped 37 out of 41 shots as Florida generated a steady stream of shots at the inexperienced netminder.

It has not always been pretty, yet Mrazek has now won four straight games in which there was a decision and has wins in six of his last eight appearances.

Jimmy Howard skated on Monday, but it sounds like he’s still a couple weeks away from returning. In the meantime, Mrazek’s worth consideration for those who can stomach the idea of almost certainly needing to replace a goalie after a certain amount of time.

-- Stephen Weiss made his longtime team pay with a goal and two assists. Even with five points in four games, I wouldn't be excessively excited about Weiss - he has just 28 SOG in 25 games - but he's at least making his monstrous contract more palatable than many expected.

-- The Panthers thrived on the power play with three goals on five thanks to the man advantage, although they did allow a Drew Miller shorthanded goal.

-- Roberto Luongo only made it about halfway through this one, allowing all five of Detroit's goals. Al Montoya was perfect in relief with 10 saves, but it wasn't enough as Luongo received a loss.

BLUE JACKETS 4, CAPITALS 3

-- Pretty disappointing season so far for Matt Niskanen, but perhaps generating four assists in his last five games (two last night) might be a sign that he's yielding dividends?

-- Jack Johnson carries some fantasy value versatility-wise, but not to the extent to stomach that -23 rating.

-- Andre Burakovsky's been doing a nice job of taking advantage of his assignment alongside Nicklas Backstrom and Alex Ovechkin. He scored a goal last night and has four points in three games.

-- Burakovsky has stolen Evgeny Kuznetsov's thunder, as the 22-year-old only has 17 points, even with a goal and an assist last night. His defensive play apparently leaves a lot to be desired, too.

PREDATORS 4, AVALANCHE 3 (OT)

-- Mike Ribeiro collected three assists, hitting 32 (and 42 points) through 46 games so far this season. He's only owned in 51 percent of leagues. Not sure how many times we'll discuss this, but chances are it won't be the last.

-- Pretty cool that after all this time, Jarome Iginla isn't THAT far from a 30-goal season with 15 in 49 games. He's not exactly on pace, but it's close enough that you have to give him a nod.

-- Again, Iginla and Alex Tanguay carrying so much of the scoring load is still not a great sign.

-- Already eight goals so far for Roman Josi, who also has 29 points. He has a very good odds to top career highs from last season's 13 goals and 40 points.

DUCKS 4, CANUCKS 0

-- Frederik Andersen didn't exactly need to hustle for his third shutout of the season, only turning aside 17 shots. That 25-year-old has won seven games in a row.

-- Solid stuff from Rickard Rakell now has seven points in six games starting with his two-goal, four-point output from Teemu Selanne Night.

-- Sami Vatanen has played 48 games, the same as last season. He's exceeded his goals (10 to 6), assists (20 to 15), points (30 to 21) and other categories.

-- I think Patrick Maroon (seven percent owned) is pretty safe for a short-term addition, at least. He now has a four-game point streak going (three goals, three assists).

FLYERS 4, COYOTES 3 (SO)

-- Yikes, Ray Emery allowed two goals on four shots and was pulled in less than six minutes of ice time. Steve Mason came in, stopped 22 out of 23 shots and got the win.

I've criticized the Flyers for rushing Mason back, and that generally rings true, but it's a little harder to beat them up when they get rewarded like this.

-- Mike Smith was actually quite strong on Tuesday, stopping 39 out of 42 shots. He's now lost six in a row (0-4-2) and only has two wins since Dec. 2.

Hey, at least the Coyotes aren't kidding themselves about tanking after trading away Devan Dubnyk, right?

-- Wayne Simmonds scored his first goal since Jan. 6 and second since Dec. 27. He's been firing a solid amount of SOG, but they come and go, which is weird to note since he's hit the 17 goal mark already.

CANADIENS 3, STARS 2

-- Alexei Emelin scored a goal and then received a game misconduct (15 PIM) for a boarding hit on Jason Spezza.

-- Carey Price stole this one for the Habs, stopping 40 out of 42 shots for his 25th win of the 2014-15 season.

-- Nice work from Andrei Markov lately. In the past six games, Markov has generated eight assists, including four in the past three games.

-- Getting tougher to believe that Kari Lehtonen will bounce back this season. He's now 19-11-7 with a .903 save percentage.

FLAMES 4, SABRES 1

-- Maybe not as tough to explain as Mike Ribeiro being so sparsely owned, but I'm still surprised to see people sleep so much on Johnny Gaudreau. With two goals, he now has 15 and 37 points on the season.

At least Jiri Hudler is being noticed, relatively speaking.

-- Chris Stewart has been showing some life ... but nah. I wouldn't bother, at least as long as he's a member of the Buffalo Sabres.

-- Sean Monahan extended his point streak to five games. At minimum, Monahan's a great Daily Fantasy bargain.

-- Mark Giordano now has 41 points, two behind the 43 he scored in 2010-11 and six behind his career high of 47 from 2013-14. The shooting percentage is still a bit high (9.2), but not so far off his career average of 7.4 that you should be concerned.

HURRICANES 4, LIGHTNING 2

-- Is it officially time for teams to let out a sigh of relief when they face Cam Ward instead of Anton Khudobin, just like last season? Khudobin has won six straight decisions, allowing one or two goals in every appearance. What a weird game.

-- Justin Faulk has nine goals and 19 assists after generating one of each in the past game. He's pretty close to three SOG per game with 127 in 47 games played.

-- I think it's safe to select Eric Staal in your next draft, even if it's in a fairly modest position. Could be especially useful if Carolina is more competitive in 2015-16.

WILD 2, OILERS 1

-- Zach Parise took a puck to the mouth. Tough times for the star winger lately, huh?

-- Devan Dubnyk won his third game with the Minnesota Wild. all three against weaker teams (Buffalo, Arizona and Edmonton). Dubnyk is now 12-6-2 with a .915 save percentage in 2014-15.

-- It's going to be weird to see Nail Yakupov's contract negotiations, as he continues to ... not set the world on fire. He has five goals and 12 points with a -22 rating in 48 games this season.
