Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid set up a Patrick Maroon goal on a gorgeous pass after slowing a Pittsburgh Penguins scoring chance earlier in the shift.

The play came late in the first period in McDavid’s much-hyped meeting against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins. It’s the first time the two generational players have gone against one another.

Earlier in the shift, McDavid stopped Penguins forward Carl Hagelin on a scoring chance by lifting Hagelin’s stick and preventing him from getting a shot off. Then later when the play went up ice, McDavid pushed Brian Dumoulin back with speed and then found Maroon in front for the tap-in past Matt Murray.

This was the second of two assists for McDavid in the period, his 10th and 11th on the year. McDavid notched another assist on Jordan Eberle’s second period goal. So far, Crosby has been held pointless.

“I think just, his speed stands out the most,” Crosby said before the game. “I think that allows him to do so many other things, but he sees the ice really well. He’s strong on the puck. I think just his hockey sense and his speed are probably the biggest things that (stand out), I think.”
