College football roundup: Stanford extends Shaw's contract
Stanford coach David Shaw agreed to a long-term contract extension, the university announced Wednesday.
Financial terms or the length of the deal were not announced..
"This agreement provides added stability and reassurance that David will be at the helm to secure our football program's long-term sustained success," new Stanford athletic director Bernard Muir said.
Shaw, 40, is completing his second year as Stanford's head coach after four years as the Cardinal's offensive coordinator. He replaced Jim Harbaugh, who left for the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL.
Stanford, ranked sixth in final regular-season BCS standings, is one four teams in BCS conferences to win 34 or more games in the past three seasons, joining Oregon (35), LSU (34) and Alabama (34).
--Oregon offensive lineman Kyle Long, son of former NFL player Howie Long, was denied an appeal for another year of eligibility and will end his college career on Jan. 3 in the Fiesta Bowl against Kansas State, the Eugene Register-Guard reported.
Long was seeking a medical hardship waiver from the NCAA. He initially enrolled at Florida State, but a battle with chemical dependency delayed his career. As a result, he lost one year of eligibility.
According to NFLDraftScout.com, the 6-foot-7, 312-pound Long ranks as the ninth best offensive tackle prospect in the NFL draft and 75th overall. He's projected as a second- or third-round pick in April.
--Illinois defensive tackle Akeem Spence will declare for the 2013 NFL draft on Friday, NFLDraftScout.com reported.
Spence, a redshirt junior, currently ranks as NFLDraftScout.com's No. 9 defensive tackle and the No. 90 prospect overall.
Spence is the third underclassmen among defensive tackles to declare early for the NFL draft, joining Ohio State's Johnathan Hankins and Missouri's Sheldon Richardson.
--Missouri freshman safety Ka'Ra Stewart was dismissed from the team after his second arrest this fall on suspicion of marijuana possession in Columbia, Mo.
Stewart was arrested Monday after University of Missouri police smelled the odor of marijuana and entered his dorm room, according to the university police department.
Stewart, who redshirted this season, was released from jail on a $500 bond.
--Notre Dame's Brian Kelly was selected the college football coach of the year by the Associated Press.
Kelly, who led to the Irish to an undefeated regular season and a BCS championship-game spot, received 25 votes. Penn State's Bill O'Brien was second with 14 votes.
